When I look back on my 24 years in education, I can honestly say that no other district has felt quite like Decatur City Schools. My journey here wasn’t planned, but it feels like it was meant to be.

My Story

Education has always been my calling. Over the years, my husband’s military career has given me the privilege of teaching in school districts all over the country. Each stop along the way has shaped me into the educator I am today. During my years in education, I’ve worn many hats:

  • 3rd Grade Teacher in El Paso

  • Reading Interventionist in Hattiesburg, MS

  • 3rd Grade Teacher in Katy, TX

  • 5th Grade Teacher at Ft. Leavenworth, KS

  • Music Teacher in Texas

  • 3rd Grade Teacher, Assistant Principal, and Dean of Students in Tampa, FL

  • 3rd Grade Teacher and Assistant Principal in Lansing, KS

Since joining Decatur City Schools in 2019, I’ve served as the ELL Collaborative Specialist and Assistant Principal at the Excel Center, and most recently, Principal at the Excel Center. Today, I’m excited to step into my role as the Coordinator of Teacher and Student Programs.

What Brought Me to Decatur

My husband’s military work brought us to the Tennessee Valley. I didn’t know it at the time, but joining Decatur City Schools would be one of the best decisions of my career!

What Makes DCS Special

I’ve had the privilege of working in many amazing school districts, but there’s something different about Decatur. I noticed it almost immediately during my first DCS Institute in 2019 at Austin Junior High School.

I didn’t know a single soul. My role wasn’t tied to one specific school, so I was just trying to find a place to sit and blend in. But as I listened to staff from across the district greet one another, share stories, and speak so positively about their leaders, I felt something powerful—a sense of unity and optimism that I hadn’t experienced anywhere else.

That feeling hasn’t faded in my six years here. DCS is full of people who genuinely care about one another and share one common goal: “Let’s do what is best for our students.” There’s no hidden agenda—just a shared commitment to the success of every child.

Knowing DCS Was the Right Place

I’ll never forget something Dr. Michael Douglas, our superintendent, said my first year here:

“New teachers are the lifeblood of our profession.”

Hearing that from the leader of our district spoke volumes. DCS doesn’t just hire teachers; they invest in them. They value growth, preparation, and joy in the profession. That was when I knew I was exactly where I was meant to be.

How DCS Supports Teachers

Support here goes beyond competitive salaries and robust professional development. What truly stands out is leadership’s willingness to think outside the box. DCS isn’t afraid to challenge “the way things have always been done.” They are always looking for ways to improve learning outcomes and give teachers the tools and resources we need to succeed.

A Program I’m Proud Of

There are many initiatives unique to DCS, but I’m especially proud of our Scholarship Initiative, launched in 2021. This program helps our high school students discover scholarship opportunities at both the regional and national level. Through quarterly Scholarship Nights, families learn how to build scholarship portfolios and prepare for college applications. Best of all, the program offers FREE essay editing and interview coaching to help students shine during scholarship, job, college, or service academy interviews.

The Heart of the Decatur Community

The warmth of this community is undeniable. From my very first day crossing the bridge into Decatur, I felt like I belonged. Of all the places my husband’s career has taken us, I’ve never felt more included and connected than I do here.

If there’s one thing I wish everyone knew, it’s that Decatur is so much more than “one of those towns by Redstone Arsenal and Huntsville.” We have our own heartbeat, our own traditions, and, in my opinion, the best teachers in Alabama—dedicated to teaching the state’s most valuable resource: our children.

A Message for Families Considering DCS

If you’re moving to North Alabama, know this: your child will be treated as an individual. DCS understands that education is not one-size-fits-all. We meet students where they are and work tirelessly to help them grow academically, socially, and emotionally.

Decatur Is…

where you feel welcome and part of the community. Whether you want to dive in and get involved or simply provide a beautiful life for your family, this is a place where you’ll feel at home.
