From a Storage Unit to a Storefront: The Story of Vinyl King

Raised in Decatur,

Vinyl King owner Hector Caceres is using bold design and hometown pride to help local vehicles, schools, and businesses stand out.

For Caceres, opening Vinyl King in Decatur was about more than choosing a location for his business. It was about investing in the community that raised him.

Caceres’ family is from Mexico City, but he has called Decatur home since he was around two years old. When the opportunity came to take his growing vinyl and design business full-time, he knew where he wanted to build it.

“I was raised here,” Caceres said. “Why not try to make other people’s cars look as good around here?”

“Anything you imagine, we can bring to life,” he said.

A Business Built One Step at a Time

Vinyl King’s current shop represents a major milestone in Caceres’ entrepreneurial journey. Before opening a storefront, he worked from a storage unit while building his skills, customer base, and reputation.

“We went from working in a storage unit to now having my own shop,” Caceres said.

He credits much of that progress to the encouragement of his mentors, Dusty and Jodi Green, owners of DesignUr T’s, who pushed him to believe the business could become a full-time career.

That support also comes from Caceres’ own family, who work alongside him to keep Vinyl King running. His sister serves as the shop’s manager and handles the bookkeeping, while his younger brother has learned the craft and now works as an installer. His father, who owns a food truck, often stops by in the afternoons to help clean, prepare vehicles, or simply spend time with the family.

“My employees are my family,” Caceres said. “For me to be able to have my own business here in Decatur means a lot.”

Helping Local Businesses Get Noticed

While vehicle transformations are a major part of Vinyl King’s work, Caceres says the relationships behind each project matter just as much. Every wrap or sign gives him the chance to learn more about another business, organization, or community member and help them communicate who they are.

“You get to be involved in other people’s lives and other people’s businesses,” Caceres said. “We have a beautiful community here. We speak to each other, and we try to make a game plan where everybody wins.”

That collaborative approach has led Vinyl King to work with Decatur-area businesses such as Bryant Brothers, HP Detailing, and Maaco Auto Body Shop and Painting. Caceres supports fellow entrepreneurs, who in turn support his business as well.

That same sense of community extends to Vinyl King’s work with local schools. For Caceres, completing a project for the school he once attended was especially meaningful and served as a full-circle reminder of how far his journey has come.

The Reveal That Makes It Worthwhile

For Caceres, the most rewarding part of a project is watching customers see the finished product for the first time.

Customer Candy Gee experienced that transformation after Vinyl King wrapped her company’s work van.

“Hector did a great job on the wrap of our work van,” Gee wrote in a Google review. “He was easy to work with on the design and had it completed in no time.”

Gee has since returned to Vinyl King for a second vehicle. Another customer, Brandon Patterson, praised the shop’s signs, service and welcoming atmosphere, describing the staff and owner as “really kind.”

Whether the project calls for a polished company vehicle or a bright pink or orange personal car, Caceres wants customers to feel free to create something that represents them.

“The thing I love most about Decatur is that you can be you,” he said.

Wrapped in Hometown Pride

Vinyl King’s growth from a storage unit to a dedicated shop reflects Caceres’s creativity, persistence, and the support he found along the way.

For him, Decatur remains the place where he wants to grow his business, create meaningful work, and help others stand out.

“In my opinion, Decatur is the place to be,” he said. “The community is so supportive.”

That support extends beyond individual relationships. Organizations such as the Decatur-Morgan County Entrepreneurial Center offer office space, mentorship, training, and business coaching, while the Decatur-Morgan County Chamber of Commerce helps connect small businesses through networking opportunities and planning resources.

Together, those relationships and resources give local entrepreneurs more opportunities to turn an idea into something lasting.
