Home for the Holidays: Decatur is Positively Festive!
A Tradition Rooted in Community Pride
What started in 2022 as Decatur’s first community-wide tree lighting has already grown into a beloved tradition. That inaugural gathering illuminated more than a tree; it sparked a renewed sense of pride and togetherness that has continued to grow each year.
On November 13, 2025, Downtown Decatur transformed into The Merry Mile, stretching from the top of 2nd Avenue to the end of Bank Street. Each year, the Holiday Open House turns Decatur’s downtown into our own holiday corridor, filled with joy, music, treats, and unmistakable charm. Attendees had the opportunity to meet Santa, participate in a toy drive at The Mallard Coffee Company, visit the Historic Train Depot for tea cookies, and get a start on holiday shopping at downtown merchants. But more importantly, come together as a community and celebrate the season together.

More Than Festivities—It’s About Belonging
While the decorations, shopping, and festive experiences bring joy, what truly stands out is the deeper purpose behind these celebrations.
As Carlton McMasters of Decatur City Council, District 3, put it: “It’s not about the next economic development project. It’s what sense of community your city has.”
Decatur’s holiday traditions embody that truth. These gatherings are less about spectacle and more about connection, neighbors supporting neighbors, children making memories, and citizens taking pride in the place they call home.
The Bizells felt that connection so strongly that they encouraged more family members to move to Decatur. It started with one family member, then two, then parents following their children. The history, the lake living, the community, and the connections made Decatur immediately feel like home.
“Decatur is positively comfortable and the right choice for our move,” said Jim Bizzell. “I am very happy with the move that we made!”
“Decatur is positively homey,” added Emily Bizzell. And we couldn’t agree more!
