Decatur Youth Symphony

Music comes in many different forms but has the unique ability to transform lives – especially when exposed at a young age. The Decatur Youth Symphony (DYS) gives students the opportunity to learn and perform orchestral music, giving them a platform for growth, character development, and community involvement, all while opening doors to future opportunities.

“We’re not just a typical youth orchestra. How do you do it in a way that benefits your community, to inspire, to educate, to entertain, to bring joy, to bring growth – that’s what we’re doing every day at Decatur Youth Symphony.”

– Jessica Clark, Executive Director, Decatur Youth Symphony

Building a Foundation for Musical Growth and Mastery

The programs offered at Decatur Youth Symphony offer students the opportunity to try new instruments and learn from skilled conductors and seasoned musicians. Samantha Setzer was given a violin to try for a year when she first joined DYS. Several years later, Samantha is a violinist in the DYS Orchestra and Chamber Ensemble. “Ultimately, you just take it one note at a time. They will celebrate those little milestones with you until you’re doing huge compositions.”

Fostering Self-Esteem and Enhancing Academic Performance

Playing in a youth symphony requires teamwork, communication, and collaboration. Rehearsals, performances, and the camaraderie developed among students cultivate essential social skills and self-esteem. Studies have also shown that participation in music programs correlates with improved academic performance. The discipline required to practice and perform enhances students’ focus and time management skills, translating to better grades in school. Music education also fosters creativity and critical thinking, which are essential for success in various fields of study.

Community Benefits

Not only does Decatur Youth Symphony pride themselves on sculpting musical minds, but they seek to reach out to underserved students by collaborating with other organizations to provide instrumental instruction that develops musical talent and promotes good citizenship. They strive to perform at a quality level at all public performances that will make them a source of civic pride for the community and an inspiration for their peers. Through live performances, DYS hopes to foster an awareness and appreciation in the community for different forms of music. Joey McLaughlin started playing the violin when he was 5- or 6-years-old. “It’s always fun to see the different types of events and things going on in Decatur that we get to play for,” he said. Now about to graduate, he’s looking to continue his musical journey.

The Future is Bright

Joey claims the Decatur Youth Symphony changed his life. Looking to the future, he hopes to make musical compositions for movies and video games professionally. Looking back on her time with DYS, Samantha is proud to have used her gifts to benefit the community.

One of the most significant benefits of community theatre is its role in nurturing local talent. It provides a platform for aspiring actors, directors, writers, and designers to hone their skills and gain experience.

“They both have bright amazing futures ahead of them,” said Clark. “Seeing them grown up – both of these kids are gifts to the orchestra. It’s neat to watch them exercise their talents and do so for the good of others.”
