T&F Learning Center: Closing the Literacy Gap in Decatur
“It’s like we were never apart – our personalities together make the daycare a whole.”
– Frankie Strong, T&F Learning Center Co-Owner
Childhood Friends Reconnect
Treza Edwards and Frankie Strong grew up together in Decatur. While Frankie stayed in Decatur, Treza moved away from 1986 – 2012. While the two were apart for years, their bond did not falter. After reconnecting and discussing their shared passions, they set out on a mission to close the literacy gap in Decatur and created T&F Learning Center. Now, as they celebrate the center’s second anniversary, they reflect on the journey that brought them here and the impact they continue to make.
A Vision Rooted in Experience & Passion
Reconnection was easy for these two lifelong friends. Frankie had recently retired after teaching in the Decatur City School System for 25 years, and Treza, an attorney and educator, served as a history teacher for the Los Angeles Unified School District for 10 years. Their combined passion and expertise helped them to recognize the growing need for quality early childhood education, especially in literacy readiness in the Decatur community. In an effort to make a difference in the community and prepare children for a bright future, they opened the learning center in February of 2023.
Growth & Impact
Research shows that early literacy skills are crucial in setting a strong foundation for lifelong learning. With hands-on learning activities and parental engagement, T&F Learning Center empowers children and families to be active participants in the learning journey, setting them up for future success. Since opening their doors, Treza and Frankie have witnessed remarkable improvements in readiness for school. However, their impact goes far beyond the classroom. They foster a sense of belonging, ensuring that every child feels valued, supported, and safe.
Looking Ahead
As they celebrate two years of success, these childhood friends remain committed to their vision. They continue to innovate, expand their reach, and advocate for the importance of early literacy. They hope to grow their programs, reach more families, and continue shaping young minds for years to come. Treza and Frankie’s story is not just about childhood friendship, it’s about turning dreams into reality and creating a lasting legacy of learning.
Happy 2nd anniversary, T&F Learning Center! Here’s to many more successes in the future!
