“I moved back home and realized that I didn’t have a place to plug in. So, I thought, why not create one?”

–  Cheyenne Sanchez  |  President & Founder of Young Professionals of Decatur

Connect

Everyone craves a sense of belonging. Whether you are single, married, have kids, or don’t have kids, social support is crucial for mental and emotional well-being. Building connections within your community not only contributes to happiness and well-being but positively impacts the local area as well.

If you are a young person between the ages of 21 and 40, the Young Professionals of Decatur (YP) may be the place to find that sense of belonging and discover a community that’s more than just a network. Through events, networking, and community engagement, YP Decatur helps you find like-minded individuals and make genuine friends to grow with.

Impact

The Young Professionals of Decatur are the voice for the next generation. The organization is involved with the chamber, city council, city planning, several non-profits, and local businesses to help provide vision and get more young people involved. Through community projects and engagements, YP Decatur fosters inclusion and connection for the betterment of the local area.

Grow

The Vision of YP Decatur is to be the leading platform for professional growth in the community. Blue-collar, white-collar – no matter your profession, the YPs prioritize personal and collective development.

A Day in the Life

Now that we know a little more about the YP organization, let’s get to know a few of the members and get a glimpse of a day in the life of a young person in Decatur!

Cheyenne Sanchez

Cheyenne is the president and founder of YP Decatur. She works as a community educator for Affinity Hospice. On most days, you will find her at the gym and dining out at local restaurants. In the summer, her favorite activity is boating. And of course, once a month (or sometimes more), she’ll be at a YP event! She loves music and sings with the worship team at church.

Favorite restaurants:

What is the most historic thing you’ve done in Decatur?

A scavenger hunt for YP Decatur. The clues take you through downtown. You learn a lot about the history of Decatur, and have fun doing it!

What do you love most about Decatur?

The people in it and their heart to serve each other. There are always people to help when you need it. Being involved in a non-profit, local businesses are always happy to donate and help out.

Jeni Jordan

A native of Morgan County, Jeni has been a member of YP Decatur for 3 years. A busy mom of 4, she joined YP Decatur looking for connection and a way to give back to the community. She works in engineering and enjoys the friendships she has made through YP Decatur, both personally and professionally. Jeni’s creative outlet is painting door hangers and hosting paint parties. Her favorite place to be is at the ball field watching her children do their thing. When they are not playing sports, you will find them hiking, fishing, or kayaking.

Favorite restaurant:

My favorite new restaurant is 609 Social, but The Brick will always be my favorite.

Favorite place to shop:

Sprouts for kids’ clothes and shoes, Firehouse Antiques, River City Pickers.

Favorite YP Event:

Paddling at the Dragon Boat Races.

What do you love most about Decatur?

I love the community and the people that are here. We are all working towards making Decatur a great place to live.

Chris Adkison

Chris settled in Decatur after attending school. He traveled for work for many years, but Decatur always felt like home. Now a local realtor, he serves as the Vice President of YP Decatur. You will find him walking every morning to start his day. In his free time, he enjoys hanging out at the dog park, meeting new people, attending music concerts, going to YP events, and traveling.

Favorite restaurant:

I’m going to stick with the OGs: Casa Santiago and Francesco’s.

What’s the most creative thing you’ve done in Decatur?

Renovating homes. I like to give them a “creative” vibe.

What do you love most about Decatur?

Decatur was the first place I moved to away from home. I had to create my home here. I love to travel. Everywhere you want to go is within 2 hours. But I love coming back home to Decatur! Decatur is a great place to do life.
