According to tradition, on Dia De Los Muertos, or “Day of the Dead,” the gates of heaven open for spirits to rejoin their family for 24 hours. For the Hispanic community, it’s a day of celebration. Family, food, dancing, and community. Thanks to the Downtown Decatur Dia De Los Muertos Committee, the entire community is invited to celebrate the holiday, which is celebrated annually on November 1 or 2.

Honoring Traditions

Dia De Los Muertos is a holiday that reunites the living and dead. Families create ofrendas (offerings) to honor their family members who have passed on. These altars feature the departed’s photos, favorite foods, and anything welcoming so they know they are not forgotten. It is common to see calaveras (skulls), marigolds (cempasuchil), and candles as decorations. The offerings are believed to encourage loved ones to return home and spend time with their relatives during the holiday. “People do not realize how many Latinos are in our area,” said Mari Juarez of the Downtown Decatur Dia De Los Muertos Committee. “We want everyone to feel welcome. Having cultural events in our area is the first step.”

Community Involvement

The Downtown Decatur Dia De Los Muertos event is a collaborative effort between the Hispanic community, the Alabama Center for the Arts, The City of Decatur, The Princess Theater, and numerous civic and cultural organizations in the Decatur/Morgan County area.

Decatur City Schools participate in art projects which are displayed on the Un Altar De La Comunidad (Community Altar) at the Alabama Center for the Arts during the event.

Multiple sponsors, vendors, and community services come together to provide authentic Mexican food and products, art, music, kids’ activities, and typical dancing.

A Day of Celebration

This year, the Dia De Los Muertos celebration will take place in Downtown Decatur on November 2nd. Admission to this all-day event is free. Dia De Los Muertos is a holiday unlike any other where both death and life are celebrated. It is a time for honoring traditions, spending time with family, and sharing it all with the community. “It’s a cultural event FOR the community,” said Juarez. Fellow committee member Mayte Sanchez added, “The simple fact of being able to bring a little bit of our country to what is now our new home in Decatur means a lot to our culture.” For more information about this year’s event, visit the Downtown Decatur’s Dia De Los Muertos Celebration Facebook page.
