Positively Buzzing With Community Spirit, Charm, and Line Dancing: The Soulful Shakers of Turner-Surles

Music, dancing, laughter, and vibrant energy. No, we’re not at a nightclub, we’re at Turner-Surles Community Resource Center! And these awesome folks? They’re all 55+ and having the time of their lives.

If You Don’t Use It, You Lose It

Line dancing might seem like something you’d expect to see at a country-western bar or a wedding reception, but at Turner-Surles, it’s the perfect way for members to stay physically active, socialize, and express themselves like they’ve never done before. Line dancing is great for your body and mind. The fun routines help improve mobility, flexibility, and balance. It also lowers the risk of falls and even gives your brain a workout, helping you stay sharp as you memorize those moves. But most of all, line dancing is FUN! For many of the Soulful Shakers, coming to dance class three times a week has filled a void, given confidence, and provided a sense of community. It’s not just about learning the steps; it’s about supporting each other, forming friendships, and dancing with joy.

Meet the Soulful Shakers

Now, if you think a line dance by a group of seniors is low-energy and basic, you’ve never seen a performance by the Soulful Shakers!

“They’ll put you to shame!” says Kristy Harris, the Director of Turner-Surles. “When I first heard about the Soulful Shakers, I pictured canes and oxygen tanks. I was in for a rude awakening – they shake it really, really well!”

Instructor Rosie Brown sums it up perfectly: “We dance with soul.” And trust us, when you see them perform, you’ll be itching to dance along with them!

However, they didn’t always possess the confidence to get in front of people and dance. Most of them admit that dancing wasn’t something they did until they joined the Soulful Shakers. Now, Linder Leaks, age 80, can impress her grandchildren, and others have found the confidence to move their bodies with the freedom not to worry about making a mistake. You may even see them out and about in Decatur, shaking it for the community! The Soulful Shakers have performed for several festivals and events throughout the community, and are looking forward to continuing to do so in 2025.

Ready to Join the Fun?

With all that energy, soul, and joy, who wouldn’t want to be part of the Soulful Shakers? If you’re on the fence about trying something new, the Soulful Shakers have just one thing to say: “Just come on!” You never know when you’ll find your new passion.

One thing’s for sure—these line-dancing legends will keep you feeling young, no matter how many candles are on your birthday cake.
