The Future of Downtown Decatur

“This is where everyone from every part of the city comes together.”

Kelly Thomas
Executive Director, Decatur Downtown Redevelopment Authority

Downtown Decatur, Alabama, is the place to be.

Over the past several years, the city’s downtown has been transformed into the vibrant destination we know today. Thanks to beautification projects, business recruitment, and new developments, Downtown Decatur has seen booming growth.

According to Kelly Thomas, Executive Director of the Decatur Downtown Redevelopment Authority, over $70 million was invested in construction downtown in 2022, and nearly $80 million is planned for 2023.

What does this mean for current residents and visitors? You will continue to see even more of the attractions and amenities you love!

“All of [this development] will serve as a catalyst to additional retail, restaurants, and entertainment options,” said Kyle Dukes Pike, Decatur City Council member.

From bike shares to walking tours, museums to shopping, there is something for everyone to enjoy in Downtown Decatur. Plus, in addition to attractions and activities open daily, downtown hosts special events throughout the year. Popular events include the Carnegie Carnival, 3rd Fridays, and the River Clay Fine Arts Festival.

With new housing options under development and a new hotel opening later this year, there will soon be more opportunities to live and stay downtown, too.

“Decatur is a small town with some big town amenities,” Pike summarized, speaking fondly of how Decatur residents enjoy a tight-knit community even as the city continues to grow.

“I don’t know what the next five to ten years are going to look like,” said Thomas. “But I’m excited to see because if they’re anything like our last ten [years], it’s going to be extremely life-changing.”

One thing is clear: As Downtown Decatur continues to thrive, its residents, business owners, and visitors will all reap the benefits for years to come.
